Net NeutralitySeptember 12, 2008 at 9:17 am

One the most debated topics today is the issue of Net Neutrality. With Comcast Suing the FCC, many people have become very outspoken on the issue, and I decided that I would give my thoughts.

Limiting the traffic of certain users based on the type of traffic is discrimination. Since I am a "bandwidth hog", my service could potentially be slowed for up to 30 minutes, due to excessive use. Honestly, I don't think it makes any sense to penalize the most active users of a product, and give premium service to people who just read their email. Of course, the optimal consumer is one who buys the product, but rarely uses it. The best texter is one who gets the unlimited texting plan, but doesn't ever use it.

Unfortunately, I think that the Internet companies are going to wrong way on this issue, and most likely they aren't going to back off. I'm hoping for an ISP start-up that will not restrict traffic based on type, or put up bandwidth caps. But maybe I'm just living in a false reality.
